With advances in cable-making techniques and radical approaches to manufacturing, there are now several solutions to this universal problem. You get Flat cables, Mesh Design cables, cables coated with exterior covers and cables designed with a zipper style design to avoid Tangle and attempt to solve the issue.

Replaceable Cables

A pair of headphones with a replaceable cable has many benefits, and one of them is if the connecting cable has a problem, it doesn’t mean that you have to buy a new one. Vision Ears introduces their latest in-ears based on the idea of the ELYSIUM to create an electrifying, detailed IEM. Combining the latest in driver technology and expert engineering Vision Ears presents the EXT. Equipped with 4 Sonion Electrostatic drivers and 2 Dynamic drivers with a Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) surround. The Vision Ears EXT is tuned with an improved HALC tuning exclusively developed to deliver pristine audio. Listening to the EXT will bring you closer to the true spirit of your sound.

The Vision Ears EXT showcases the latest in driver technology and comes equipped with four Sonion electrostatic drivers in conjunction with a 9.2mm dynamic driver and a 6mm driver. The electrostatic drivers create a wide-open landscape of lush details, and the 9.2mm dynamic driver powers the low end and the 6mm dynamic driver for the mids. With this combination, the Vision Ears EXT delivers the uncompromising beauty and greatness of your music.

The 9.2mm and 6mm dynamic drivers of the Vision Ears EXT is equipped with a Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) surround. This technique of making the surround allows the driver to perform with a very low THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). The Al-Mg Alloy diaphragm of these drivers is light but stiff, which makes the performance surprisingly fast and precise. A Super Strong Rare Earth N52 Neodymium Magnet, allow the driver to perform better, with less distortion at any operating level. In addition, we have added to our 6mm driver a double N52 Neodymium Magnet, to decrease even more the THD and increase the SPL without increasing the size of the driver.

The Vision Ears EXT utilises an improved HALC (High Precision Levelling Chamber) tuning concept that was exclusively developed for the midrange driver. Additionally to the levelling chamber of the HALC, the EXT use an STC (Side Tuning Chamber) that allows the midrange to be finely tuned in the vocal range. This new generation gives more ability for tuning and, in the end, a significantly higher level of realism in the midrange. The result is a smooth and rich presence in the middle frequencies. Vocals are full and rich, marvellously performing with a vivid and natural tone.

The idea behind the design of the Vision Ears EXT was to create a technical but elegant shell with the aesthetics of an open back headphone. The most captivating element of the EXT is the purple machined faceplate with the magnificent X design. The complex CNC machining used was optimised for the EXT to realise the delicately shifting lines of the design. The elegant deep purple colour anodisation is a Vision Ears custom colour, proudly showing the brand colour. A vacuum metal mesh is elegantly sparkling underneath the open structure of the X design. This special aluminium acoustic mesh is giving the dynamic drivers the air to breathe and unfold their rumbling power while protecting the internal components from outer influences.

The Vision Ears EXT comes bundled with a premium 8 wire SPC 28AWG cable with a balanced 2.5mm connector as a standard. With the all-new Vision Ears Adapter, you can change the termination from 2.5mm to 4.4mm. This premium adapter comes with a gold-plated phosphor bronze conductor and an audio grade POM insulation. The EXT also comes bundled with a premium case. The machining of this case was made with extraordinary precision, to make the two parts of the case fit perfectly together. The inside walls are all covered with a rubber inlay so that the earphone is always protected when you are on the go. A premium leather pocket holds the earphones in place, preventing them to collide during transport. All of these products are designed and built-in Cologne, Germany.

Regions of the frequency spectrum

SUB BASS
(20Hz - 80 Hz)

The first section of the frequency spectrum is the sub-bass. Everything below 80Hz is sub-bass, so generally, you need a subwoofer or a good pair of headphones (open-back headphones, for example) to hear this region. This region comprises instruments like the Kick Drum and the Bass Guitar. You should be able to hear Sub-Bass if you’re listening on monitors or headphones. But if you’re listening on a laptop or a phone, there’s no way you will hear that.

MID BASS
(80 Hz - 300 kHz)

After the Sub-Bass region, we get into the region known as the Bass or Mid-Bass. This region consists of everything between 80 and 300 hertz. In this area, we’ve got instruments like bass guitar and the low end of a snare. Lots of the low-end vocals as well, because male vocals are going to have the fundamental below 200Hz in most cases.

LOWER MIDRANGE
(300 Hz - 1000 kHz)

Next, if you go from 300 Hz up to 1000 kHz, this is known as the Lower Midrange, and this is a crucial region for music because this is where you get a lot of buildup with guitars, vocals, and even the top-end of the bass guitar especially. Lower Midrange is an area guilty of adding mud to a mix and clarity in this region lifts a track exponentially.

UPPER MIDRANGE
(1 kHz - 6 kHz)

Human hearing focuses inherently on this frequency range. So it’s crucial to get this range right. This region consists of the main focus of the track (e.g. vocals) and synths. Be aware that this is also where you can start to get into harshness and aggressive tones.

TREBLE
(6 kHz - 10 kHz)

After the Upper Midrange, we’ve got the Treble region between 6kHz and 8 kHz, and this is where things start to get harsh. This region is where we have brittleness from instruments like the Hi-Hats and Cymbals. This is also a crucial range for clarity and aggression, especially for female vocals.

AIR
(10 kHz - 20 kHz)

At the end of the frequency spectrum, we get to the Air region or the Top End. This region consists of everything above 10 kHz. This is where we have air and this is where we get a sense of shine and sparkle in our music.

EXTraordinary fun!

Let me start with a long review warning ⚠️ first…

Packaging: Bordering on excessive but more the merrier! One of the best unboxing experience guaranteed with (so much) stuff inside the box all presented so beautifully.

Cable, tips/fit : VE nailed both the aspects here. Comes with a very high quality balanced cable that looks, feels & compliments the IEM in every way. This IEM has an odd shaped nozzle (bcos of the ESTAT drivers being positioned closer on the nozzle) but fits like a glove to me, thanks partly to the supplied Sedna Crystal tips.

Sound and pairing : With 2DDs covering the bass and midrange and 4 ESTATs covering the upper frequency, this is a different set up than the usual.

Bass : this is a warm IEM that priorities delivering impactful music over clinical delivery. So the bass hits hard, tight, fast and is in plentiful with a huge body and texture. The EXT has enough sub bass extension and loads of mid bass. Yet there is absolutely zero bleed and keeps the engagement factor very high. It is quite amazing how VE pulled this one off. The sheer physicality of the lower end is the stand out factor.

Midrange: Despite delivering truck loads of bass, the midrange holds its place well and shines thru. Vocals come across crystal clear and has a very sweet & natural timbre to it. They are also positioned just right according to me. Not very high and not very intimate.

Treble : The 4 ESTATs do a brilliant job here. Sparkly treble with loads of resolution. Soft, shimmery treble contrast the powerful low end beautifully. Focus seems to be again on a rich and engaging presentation.

It’s just amazing how massive the head-staging is ! The EXT creates a huge holographic space in which it neatly positions and images each and every instrument. Big and impactful sound seems to be the core focus and the EXT comes out with flying colors here.

Other notable observations:
At 10 ohm impedance and 108db sensitivity, on paper it is a very easy to drive IEM. And IT IS fairly easy to drive even using a dongle. But pair it with a quality amp, pump some power and current, the EXT comes alive with a big, bold and stunning music presentation that will grab your attention from the get go. TBH I found it very difficult to focus on anything else when plugged into the EXT!
Also I found the EXT to be forgiving on not-so-great-quality recordings.

Pairing:

This is interesting as the EXT is one such IEM that sounds significantly different with various sources & gear.

The Mojo 2 managed to give the sub bass & higher frequencies an uplift, making it a fairly U shaped sound signature. This also meant a somewhat un-natural gain around the 3-5khz, giving a sharp edge to notes. Good thing is that can be easily EQd out.

The Cayin RU6 R2R dongle sounded alright. Was expecting it to add bit more weight but to my ears, it sounded soft and didn’t really bring out the dynamic nature of the IEM. The RU6 (4.4 bal) is no slouch when it comes to power but clearly the EXT needs more grunt to shine.

Fiio M11 plus AKM edition managed to pull out some heft on the bass and also managed to keep the ESTAT sparkle on nicely. Fairly musical pairing.

Hiby RS6 R2R DAP with its dedicated VE EXT profile tuning took full advantage of the capabilities of this IEM. Hard hitting bass, outstanding vocal rendition, lively treble we’re in full showcase. Best combo in my opinion. The one I was most skeptical about TBH!

Finally, the Cayin C9 amp (paired with M11 plus as well as RS6) with 4W of power bought the best out of the EXT. This is an IEM that scales enormously with good amplification. With more power, the transients and micro details shine making the music listening crazily enjoyable and addictive. The already high PRaT got more elevated. I don’t know about end game but after a long time I am back to listening to music and not the gear.

Cons:
a. Price price price. But makes up with luxurious sound
b. Not a technical monitor and hence doesn’t try to excel in presenting micro nuances
c. Need investment in a good source, amplification to make the most of the EXT
d. 2.5mm instead of 4.4mm (see now am nitpicking🙈)
e. No custom option

With the Elysium EXTended, VE has truly hit a purple patch! How I wish there was a custom version of this. This is one is a keeper for sure!

Kudos HPZ for getting this and also opening the entire line up of VE for music lovers like me!
