Specifically: it’s built for sound quality only, so there’s little in the way of advanced features or frills, instead focusing on comfort and performance above any other concern.
In a word, the sound is effortless. It just springs forth and gently bathes you in its detail, instead of pummeling you, which is a possible side effect of closed-back headphones.
The S2 has smooth and delicious treble for high hats and higher pitched instruments. It's done completely different compared to the 600, 660S and 560S. And it's realism.
The coil matches the 300-ohm impedance of the HD 600 & HD 650. This new coil provides higher magnetic force and electrical dampening for cleaner impulse response.
The Sennheiser HD 660S2 are very good for neutral sound. They have a warm sound profile and, despite being open-back, pack more thump and rumble than their predecessor.
The waiting is finally over, as clearly HD660S2 aren’t only bassier, deeper, and punchier sounding than any other cans from the HD6XX lineup.

TL;DR = This is NOT a review of HD 660S2, I am not an audiophile. This is about why I choose HD 660S2 instead 600 and 650.
My first Sennheiser headphone was HD 202II [closed back with fixed (3m /1̶0̶ m̶i̶l̶e̶ l̶o̶n̶g̶/ 10-feet) long cable]. Was so annoyed with long cable, but heard the Sennheiser sound signature for the first time. Then, over the coming years I had GSP 300, HD 4.50 BT; both were closed back with later being wireless bluetooth headset.
The first open-back Sennheiser I bought was HD 599 SE and realized the difference between open vs closed back headphone. My default preferred headphone type became open-back only.
HD 599 SE was serving me well; but I had the curiosity to try some audiophile-grade open-back headphone. I found Headphone Zone and bought my first entry-level audiophile open-back headphone, Sennheiser HD 560s.
Now, I knew why these are called audiophile headphones; all my favorite music tracks came alive and sounded entirely different and detailed. I realized what I was missing by using closed-back non-audiophile headphones.
HD 560s became my most favorite and daily driver headphone...
but I wanted to dig deeper into audiophile rabbit hole as I was stalking legendary Sennheiser HD 600 series for a long while but could not decide which one to buy between HD 600, HD 650, and most recently launched HD 660S2.
I scoured the internet over reddit, YouTube and so many other sites just to be informed which one is the best HD 600 series headphone. I came know about the release dates and legacy timeline of HD 600 series;
HD 600 = Released in 1997 (the "OG Legend" that started it all)
HD 650 = Released in 2003 ("Legend Evolved")
HD 660S = Released in 2017 (600 series took a new direction; some liked it, some hated it.. in other words, it is "Legend Misunderstood")
HD 660S2 = Released in 2023 (Sennheiser describes it as 660S upgrade and they did something new with it)
I have read and watched many reviews about HD 660S2 (the 600 series flagship for now); but majority of the famous reviewers were not so positive about S2; they were divided between preferring HD 600(Joshua Valour) and HD 650(DMS) over this one.
There are no physical stores near me where I can demo listen 600,650, and 660S2 for myself and decide which one I like the most; so I had to decide on my own.
I decided to go with Sennheiser's latest HD 600 series flagship; "HD 660S2" and I am in the process to realize if this is their greatest among the series.

It’s an absolutely brilliant upgrade over 650/600/660S
Easier to drive while being just as brilliant while being less dependent on EQ to make it shine
Everything seems to have been improved across the board
Honestly, this is one of the biggest values in audio today
This is even bigger value than 600 at 20k because the 660S2 is more palpable for the masses at large and also improves on technicalities for hardcore audiophiles

Great comfort, light weight, superb quality and very beautiful. Music simply flows naturally. Took a while to burn in and after that its simply outstanding. Not very hard to drive but still scales up nicely with my Topping A70 Pro. Loving it.

It’s is Superb headphone. Bass is good however it’s not too much by not making fatigue. Sound staging is very clear to notice. In fact, I was able to hear all the instruments clearly. Even if I don’t concentrate on background instruments, the 660 s2 headphone will notice me about tiny instruments sounds. Overall good headphone for the one who is looking for decent bass, better sound imaging and vocal forward feature.
