Truly awesome sound... and Bad cables.

I got this after going through almost very review available. So I knew what to expect. And I was not disappointed. Starting off with the unboxing experience, Moondrop provides you with a wonderful unboxing experience, right from the "lowly" Quarks to the Jiu and beyond.

For the price, this was the best packaged IEM I have ever bought. You open the nice, weighted magnetic closing box with the classy anime graphic and are greeted with the gorgeous face plate of the Jiu, set like branches of a plant with the cables running down into the bottom of the foam cover.

Moondrop Chu/Jiu comes with their famed Spring Tips which alone cost about 1000 bucks for a set. Which makes the Jiu and the Chu good value, if you like the spring tips. Personally I found them to be excellent, but they need a bit of extra care to keep clean, due to the sticky surface which attracts dust.
The same goes for the cables of the Jiu, which has a slightly sticky feel. The cable tends to rub against your clothing and skin, and the noise can be felt in your ear. It is also hard to keep fixed over your ear and tends to slip off. There are a pair of included cable guides that will help the cables stay over your ear, but I found the whole setup to be very fussy.

Once you have set up eveything to your liking, and found the right size eartips and fitted them in your ear, you can really start to enjoy the crip, clear sound that the Jiu offers. The bass is adequate, but personally, I used Wavelet app to boost the bass by 4-5 dB under 150Hz to suit my needs.

The mids and vocals are really crisp. The highs are very well presented too, with a good amount of treble. However, I did think that the treble was a bit too sharp and I couldn't listen to it for too long. I checked the online forums and there was a suggestion to replace the very wide bore spring tips with a more narrow bore ear tip. That did dampen the treble a bit, and made it a lot easier to listen to. I have a very sensitive ear for treble, so your experience may vary. I had a similar experience with the KZ ZEX as well.

Overall, for a DSP IEM, the Jiu is very well priced especially with the kit it provides. Although the cable is a bit fussy, the overall experience exudes quality, and you feel like you are handling a quality product. I have the Quarks DSP as well, IMO, the Quarks has the better cable of the two, and also a bit more bass, even with the smaller driver. But the Jiu feels "heavier" somehow in its overall sound. Overall, for its price, it is a definite add-on to your collection, especially if you don't already have the Chu.

Great sounding, pocket friendly and convenient IEMs

I used to make fun of audiophiles that they listen to audio files and not actual music and decided to try one budget IEM (MoonDrop Jiu) to understand what the fuss is all about. Now I realised what I was missing all these years! I'm able to hear a few new instruments in the songs I've been listening to for more than 2 decades.

Coming to the Moondrop Jiu, I wanted to go with Chu initially but didn't want to spend money on a dongle and Jiu came with a USB type C connector which was convenient. There is zero stethoscope effect, the buds fit in the ears comfortably and the passive noise cancellation is too good. Sound is beautiful (exactly as per my taste)

I have some decent headphones like Marshall Mode EQ and Sony WH-1000XM4 and I used to enjoy listening to music on these but now I stick to Jiu. Now, I'm kinda having buyers remorse for my earlier purchases :(

Update: I had earlier rated it 4 stars. Changing it to 5 as I'm unable to find a good reason for reducing 1 star (considering the price)

Best Type-C Iem

Redefined all my favourite tracks

I took my time writing this review because I wanted to first have an all-round experience using the Jiu. This is the first IEM that I'm mindfully using, although I had a SoundMagic E10C before and it had great sound. But I used that mostly to listen to podcasts, which didn't really explore the E10C's abilities.

The Jiu, being my first mindful experience of hearing an audiophile grade iEM, is a total revelation. The bass that comes alive in familiar tracks, like ARR's Dil Se, or The Eagles' live MTV performance, or any of the Steely Dan, Floyd numbers, The separation, sound stage, clarity of individual sounds, all means I am re-discovering tracks I thought I knew well.

I have used a SONY MDR-7506 for the past 15 years, and the Jiu blows that out of the water. The studio monitor may still be the best thing for a sound engineer, but if listening for entertainment, the Jiu is far ahead.

Some cons: The ear clip is a little flimsy, the wires keep slipping out. There is a lot of wire entwining that happens. Also, the lack of a removable wire is fine for now, but obviously worrisome long term.

Pro: I am able to use this without a DAC. So i got off the ground without even buying a DAC, and that leapfrogging is an awesome gift the Jiu gives.

I fully recommend this for the sound. Be mindful of the downsides I described (those aren't to do with the sound, anyway).

Thanks a lot for your detailed and genuine feedback, we're glad that you have such positive thoughts about the product and we'll share your thoughts with the brand as well. It'll also help our fellow customers to make the right choice!

MOONDROP IS BACK WITH YET ANOTHER BUDGET-ORIENTED IEM - THE JIU

Moondrop, a well-known Chi-Fi audio company, has recently launched its latest in-ear monitor - the Moondrop JIU. The JIU presents an exceptional listening experience with its 10mm dynamic driver with a titanium-plated composite diaphragm. The JIU's sound signature is tuned to achieve a natural yet detailed sound, with a focus on clarity. Alongside its excellent audio performance, the JIU features a comfortable and durable design, making it suitable for audiophiles and casual listeners. JIU is a brand new budget-friendly IEM with sound optimised with DSP technology.

HEADPHONE-ZONE-MOONDROP-JIU

OPTIMISED TO DELIVER DETAILED AND CLEAR AUDIO WITH DSP TECHNOLOGY

Moondrop is researching hard into the DSP territory with back-to-back releases. Following the success of Quarks DSP and Droplet, Moondrop is here with a bespoke DSP single dynamic driver IEM, the Moondrop JIU. At a far glance, the JIU looks like a Moondrop CHU with a Type-C termination. Moondrop has taken the cavity structure and driver configuration of the Chu and further optimised its performance using DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology for the JIU. The optimisations done via DSP are promising quality upgrades and improved sound while being easy on the pocket. Moondrop has optimised the sound performance with built-in SOC that helps create a balanced listening experience with a natural soundstage.

HEADPHONE-ZONE-MOONDROP-JIU
HEADPHONE-ZONE-MOONDROP-JIU

FEATURES A HIGH-PERFORMANCE 10MM DYNAMIC DRIVER FOR CLEAN SOUND

Moondrop JIU features a 10mm dynamic driver unit that offers an enhanced audio performance by using PVD (physical vapour deposition) technology. This technique involves depositing Titanium metal on a polymer film to create nanometer-sized crystals on its surface layer, which is then moulded integrally. The resulting diaphragm has improved rigidity and damping, leading to better treble extension and details. Additionally, JIU utilises Aria's decentralised dynamic structure, a 10mm composite cavity with a high-frequency phased waveguide, N52 ND magnet internal magnetic circuit, and 0.035mm ultra-thin imported CCAW sound coil to achieve high energy conversion efficiency and deliver exceptional performance with a full dynamic range and rich details.

EXPERTLY TUNED FOLLOWING MOONDROP’S VDSF TARGET RESPONSE

The Moondrop JIU has been fine-tuned by Moondrop using their renowned VDSF target response curve, which is a parametric target that uses composite elements to restore audio quality to mastering levels. The JIU delivers a clear and crisp audio presentation with an open soundstage experience, which is preferred by many audiophiles. To achieve this, Moondrop has developed a unique cavity structure using FEA simulation and 3D printing technology that matches the desired target curve.

CAREFULLY DESIGNED ACOUSTIC CAVITY STRUCTURE WITH ZINC ALLOY SHELLS

To match the desired frequency response, Moondrop has professionally designed the acoustic cavity structure using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) simulation and 3D printing technology. The pair features high-quality Zinc Alloy material. The metal outer cavity is manufactured from alloy materials using melting and injection moulding technology, thus creating a stable, precise, and aesthetically pleasing shell that is durable and reliable. The overall design is lightweight but also has a solid, robust build structure.
