The differences in acoustic design are the honeycomb grills on the ear cups. Focal has added an 'M'-shaped grille inside of the driver to help improve linearity in the high frequencies when you compare it to the Utopia (2016). The voice coil has also seen changes, the Utopia (2016) had an all-aluminium voice coil, and the new Utopia has a mixture of aluminium and copper, which tames down the highs a little. On the speaker driver's motor unit, there is a black and red double grille that adds to the aesthetics and acoustic performance of the driver. The new Utopia is fundamentally the same fantastic headphone as its predecessor and has been improved; in every way.

But this time, engineers at Focal have used forged, recycled carbon, so each piece has a different pattern. This design adds visual aesthetics with an all-black finish. It has a flatter finish, which makes it far less likely to scratch and accumulate oil from your fingertips, making it simpler to keep looking good. Each grille now features a flame logo in the middle. On; the speaker driver's motor unit, there is a black and red double grille, and the visible red adds a splash of colour when looking into the centre of the ear cups. The subtle yin-yang pattern on the ear cups' outer casing is another new feature. According to Focal, this symbolises the harmony of technology and design. Lambskin leather covers the memory foam on the earpads and headbands, making Utopia; a pleasant; pair. Utopia is packaged in faux-leather and includes a black fabric thermoformed carrying bag, two high-fidelity cables (10ft and 5ft / 3m and 1.5m) with 3.5mm termination, as well as Lemo® connectors and a Jack adaptor for use while travelling or at home with an amplifier. The package also includes a 10ft. (3m) cable, ideal for use at home on a high-end amplifier, thanks to its balanced 4-pin XLR connector and two Lemo® connectors.
