What is FiiO R9 on the whole?
FiiO R9, an Android-based streaming DAC and headphone amplifier, showcasing an upgraded design with a high-gloss 'fully liquid metal bicolor' body, RGB light strip, and a 6" 1080p touch panel. Initially equipped with Android 10, the R9 is set to receive an upgrade to Android 12 in Q1 2024. Notable improvements include a dedicated Qualcomm Bluetooth chip for aptX, aptX Adaptive, and aptX HD codecs, as well as a shift to dual ESS Labs 9030PRO for D/A conversion, enhancing audio performance. The THX788+ chipset-driven headphone amplifier now boasts eight active channels, delivering a formidable 7 Watts of power for demanding headphones. While retaining the analogue outputs of 2 x RCA and 2 x XLR, the R9 introduces HDMI ARC alongside USB, coaxial, and TOSLINK digital inputs, offering enhanced connectivity, including potential TV audio integration.
What are the various inputs/outputs like?
The front panel has 6.35mm (SE), 4-pin XLR & 4.4mm Balanced headphone outputs. The FiiO R9 gets you covered with the standard and widely used headphone outputs. The rear panel is where the magic lies. It hosts a microSD card slot which supports up to 2TB if you like to play offline files on the go. It has Single-Ended RCA and 3-pin XLR Balanced lineouts. Surprisingly it also has a USB host interface that supports external USB devices like decoders, hard disks, keyboards, and expansion hubs. It also offers Optical & Coaxial IN/OUT and an Ethernet port for wired connection to a network. The USB Type-C port (USB 3.0) on the FiiO R9 supports data transfer, DP output mode, USB DAC, and USB HOST-related functions. The FiiO R9 has a Bluetooth and WiFi antenna embedded into the rear panel with a power switch allowing you to switch between DC or AC power supply.

Yep! You can download streaming apps from Google Play Store like Tidal, Spotify, Apple music, etc.

I was using the FIIO K7 AKM version with my own RPI5-based volumio setup for my main music setup. and R9 is a great improvement in terms of Sound quality and tons of connectivity options. there is a learning curve but worth spending time on it. Clear and natural sound. and able to smoothly paly all my offline and online sources well. few quick points to use.
1: use LO setting on the output dial to get a decent and punchy sound. It has two RCA out, use the top one. I noticed low output from the bottom one.
2: It would have been great to have an RCA input or Phono input to make it a complete media hub.
3. I connected a USB3.0 SSD but experienced slow bootup. which is annoying. When I switched to a microsd card this was resolved. Fiio should fix this problem in future firmware.
4; My personal preference is FIIO music app with no eq setting as it gives more natural sound. while paying with eq. I got distortions and clipping in output.
5: I use the PowerAMP app for local music play. I found I cannot use HIRes output option of PwoerAMP R9. Whereas I can use it on my IBasso DX240. this may be resolved in future android versions.

Love the versatility of the unit - it does absolutely everything and connects with almost anything. Needed a solution which would enable me to listen to music while working but not using my desktop or phone as the source. This fit the bill after hearing rave reviews of the R7 this seemed like a step up (at least from the specs) but the overall sound lets this down. It is just ok - my Schiit stack (Magnius, Modius, and Lokius) is way way better. The Schiit stack is warmer as well as punchier than this but the stack didnt solve other issues. I havent yet fiddled with all the settings and there are a lot so will revisit this review once I have had a chance to do so. One other thing if ur an apple iPhone user the android OS may be a steep learning curve. It has been for me. Tested this with Sennheiser IE900s and will be testing this very soon with Meze Advar and Empyrean IIs. As usual shipping (from Chennai to Gurgaon) was extremely fast ordered the previous evening and delivered next day afternoon so kudos to Headphone Zone.
