The FiiO FF5 is an earbud that eschews the traditions of its form factor and features a specially-developed 14.2mm dynamic driver that employs an innovative carbon-based diaphragm. Specifically, the driver features a PU gasket plus a carbon-based diaphragm that allows the driver to be both lightweight and highly rigid. This design architecture results in a sound with quick transients and excellent treble resolution thanks to the driver construction minimising non-linear distortion by mitigating unwanted driver movement. The FiiO FF5 promises to produce a vocal forward presentation that will please even the most discerning audiophiles.

The FiiO development team aimed to reduce unwanted reflections and vibrations within the shell of the FF5, leading to the development of a diffuse open design featuring an acoustic damping device. This design architecture allows some of the air pressure within the earphone to diffuse to the outside - resulting in fewer unwanted internal reflections and standing waves, resulting in purer sound and improved bass response. A NEW INNOVATION IN EARBUD ACOUSTICS THAT REDUCES UNWANTED RESONANCES

FiiO has developed a new acoustic architecture built into the FF5. It hosts extended bass acoustic resistance pipes for clean and precise sonic reproduction. FiiO has kept FF5's performance a step ahead of the previous generation's earbuds. Compared to typical in-ear monitors, more care has to be taken when designing the earbuds to ensure great sound. After much experimentation, FiiO developed acoustic resistance pipes in the FF5 that help to increase and extend bass response. When the driver diaphragm vibrates, the air pressure that results is diverted to these acoustic resistance pipes, reducing the resonance.

TUNED TO PERFECTION FOR A MORE NUANCED AND LAYERED SOUND

The FiiO FF5 is expertly tuned with an emphasis on full-range performance rather than being targeted. Therefore, great attention to detail was FiiO's aim, accurately depicting the vocal-centric pitch across the frequency spectrum. FiiO specifically controlled the resonance at 127 Hz to prevent vocals from feeling muddy or boomy while appropriately increasing the frequency range to make vocals transparent and more prominent. Thanks to the light weight of carbon fibre, the FF5 has excellent treble performance, allowing the overtones of vocals, guitars, cymbals, violins, and other instruments to come through in a more nuanced and layered sound.

BUILD TO LAST FOR YEARS WITH AN ALL-ALUMINIUM CONSTRUCTION FUSED WITH ANTI-SLIP SILICONE RINGS

The FiiO FF5 is made of aluminium alloy, commonly used in other high-end earphones, to reduce weight while maintaining high durability. A single ear unit only weighs 3.4g – allowing the FF5 to disappear in your ear and immerse you in pure auditory bliss. FiiO has always been a user-oriented company. Some users prefer to use anti-slip silicone rings when using earbuds. Thanks to their feedback, included with the FF5 are three types of sponge covers and moulded anti-slip silicone rings. The total of 6 anti-slip silicone rings come in M/L sizes and provide a better seal for more extended bass while maintaining high resolution in the other parts of the frequency response. You can tweak the sound of the FF5 by using three different sponge covers that provide better bass extension, sparkly treble, and balanced sound.

BUNDLED HIGH-QUALITY MONOCRYSTALLINE COPPER CABLE WITH SWAPPABLE PLUG TERMINATIONS

The FiiO FF5 comes standard with a silver-plated monocrystalline cable with 14 braided wires into a small strand, and seven small strands are braided together into a strand - resulting in 4 large strands with a total of 392 wires. More wires significantly increase the cross-sectional area of the wires in the cable for enhanced transmission rate and stability. The Litz braiding reduces the skin effect, which further helps the transmission rate by enhancing conductivity. The FiiO FF5's cable significantly improves treble resolution, reproducing a highly detailed yet nuanced sound. The FF5 features an MMCX connector, allowing you to replace them with aftermarket cables. In addition, it features swappable audio plugs, allowing you to freely change between the included 3.5mm/4.4mm plugs.

When comfort and fit meet the sound

Received FF5 a few days ago.

I tried the silicone rings at first and they didn't fit me at all and I thought these were going back. I then tried the foams and they fit as good as the VE Monks if not better. They sure fit better than the EM5. I can't say if FF5 sounds any better than EM5 but definitely sounds more interesting and engaged.

The sound is nice warm, smooth and slightly thicker which I prefer. They have very good treble and they never sound harsh like Serratus (which was not my cup of tea). I think FF3 had a lot more bass than these but the bass on FF5 is tight and cleaner IMO.

FF5 do what earbuds do best, sounding open and these are excellent at that. I even preferred them over my KPH-40s.

Not happy

Expected more for the price. Build quality is not meeting expections. The wire makes its noise on walking around when in use. The IEM is light but cable to heavy due to which the IEM is always pulled downwards. There is no clip also included in the box. 3 star since it doesn't meet expectations as even the sound stage is not that great. I strongly feel it's over priced after using fiio since 2015. There is no visibility of R or L channel which is for human eyes....oh god ! I nag nag and nag ...i stick a tape to identify this L or R channel . Phew... The worst is the IEM connectors are shaky and occasionally I feel there is some noise generated of this.

More comfortable than any IEM - if you get a good fit !

An ear bud design is supposed to offer less isolation but is more forgiving to your ears. Though you will not get a secure fit like an IEM, but since area of contact with your ears is less, an ear bud is supposed to give more comfort to listener while enjoying music. The sound quality justifies the asking price but the big question is - will it give a comfortable fit as each individual has unique ear size and shape. For me, it just about fits well and it is more about getting used to this conventional style of ear buds. Thanks to HPZ team for their timely delivery and also making available products for audio enthusiasts in India at a reasonable price point and time frame !
