Our Verdict

This was such a surprising find for me! The R70x wasn't very well known in audiophile circles, but these have to be one of my favourite headphones in this segment. They look flimsy and light, but the build quality is surprisingly robust. The sound is super open, clean, and very well balanced. Ideal for any beginner and professional alike

This headphone is a classic. The Sennheiser HD650 isn't a new headphone, but it's still a favourite amongst audiophiles. The sound signature can be best described as 'reference grade' because so many people over the years have used this as a benchmark for use in the studio and at home. Pair it with a decent tube amplifier to hear it sing.

Audeze MM-100 is the second headphone collaboration with Grammy-winning engineer Manny Marroquin, designed for studio professionals and audiophiles. If you prefer a monitor-like sound, this headphone is an excellent choice for you.

Embarking on My Audiophile Quest: The Quest for Natural Sound and Comfort

I'm just starting out on my audiophile adventure, and after some initial research, I've narrowed down what I’m looking for:
- A natural sound profile (I’m not into heavy bass)
- Open-back design and lightweight for those marathon coding sessions
- A long AUX cable compatible with my Mac Mini M2
The Audio-Technica ATH-R70x seems to check all these boxes perfectly.

If you’re in the same boat and find the sound lacking, take a look at how the cable connects to the headset—it might make a difference!

Happy listening and may your audio be as pure as a crystal-clear symphony!

Sounds like you're off to a great start on your audiophile journey!

Excellent quality and extreme value

This sounds as clean as HD800S without treble peaks and more bass. quality is way beyond its price level.

Hey there,

Thank you for taking the time to write this review, we really appreciate the genuine feedback! Your review will definitely help fellow audiophiles to make an informed decision.

Neutral with treble roll off.

R70x headphone is Good one.I am a highly treble sensitive person.Previously i used a hifiman edition xs headphone.Though it's a neutral headphone ,the treble sparkling and metalic timbre was unbearable for me.I sold it and researched a lot and came to know that r70x owns a warm neutral sound with treble roll-off sound signature.Crinacle also rated r70x with A- grade..Heard that r70x is relatively better than hd 650 and hd 600 with good bass...

R70x is super lightweight, but when you hold,it seams subpar. But it will last long. The ear cup are small, persons with large ears may feel discomfort.I heard that swapping stock earpad brainwavz xl microsuede will solve the comfort issue. We can listen r70x all day long without ear fatigue due to its laid back and smooth sound signature. But need a good amp to power it.I am using fiio k7 to juice r70x.Almost all headphones out there are more analytical and have sharp trebles. If you are a treble sensitive person ,have a look at r70x.cheers!!!

Thanks a lot for your detailed and genuine feedback, we're glad that you have such positive thoughts about the product and we'll share your thoughts with the brand as well. It'll also help our fellow customers to make the right choice!

Extremely balanced with large soundstage and imaging

While the Germans know how to make headphones like a tank, The Japanese know how to tune headphones for versatility and studio reference grade sound quality.

These headphones are seriously neutral without any sort of colouring at all.

Bass is less than Beyerdynamics but that's not an issue in playing games because games anyway need high treble.

The sound positioning in games is even better than my old Beyerdynamics DT990.

Thank you for your review! We are glad to hear that you are enjoying the balanced sound and precise imaging of the ATH-R70x. We appreciate your support and hope you continue to enjoy your headphones. Happy listening!

If it aint broke dont fix it

Bit the bullet and purchased it. Upgraded from the warmer blon-03s and never looked back. Particularly liked the imaging and its certainly one of the strong point. The open back style also allows for a more space for the instruments, which is prefer over the intimate style of the HD650s. The Neutral sound does take some time to get used to after the constant exposure to warmer sound signatures. Its really made listening to music a new experience for beginner audiophiles like myself. And it ranks highly on Crincales top headphones.

Currently daily drive it by using the MacBook Pros High impedance connector, but will perhaps upgrade to a pair of tubes in the future. The sound is certainly revealing and absolutely a big step up in resolution of the instruments.

The build is light, it did seem a little delicate at first but a few months in I know its designed well to hit the absolutely featherlight weight. You can wear this for hours and not have much strain, or the warm irritation around your ears.

The only cons would probably be the that the stock cable is extremely, but at this point I am nitpicking.

Mind blowing sound that has certainly tenured the years, well if it aint broke dont fix it. Heres to superb Japanese engineering in their R series!

Thanks a lot for your detailed and genuine feedback, we're glad that you have such positive thoughts about the product and we'll share your thoughts with the brand as well. It'll also help our fellow customers to make the right choice!

Good as expected.

1.Wide soundstage.
2.Like HD600 but with more bass.
3.Very light and comfortable.
4.Not that of a good build but it can survive
long if its handled with care.

Hey Piyush, thank you so much for the awesome review!

One of the best sounding studio headphones with the best Soundstage

First of all, I'm not an audiophile and this is the first time I've tried an open back headphone (I hope I'm not biased). Sound is well balanced but I think that the sibilance is somewhat dull, compared to my v shaped sounding fiio fd5. The best thing is the Soundstage. It has decent height and width but the depth is amazing. It shines while listening to live music such as Hans Zimmer's performances. You can feel some instruments closer to your head and others far behind. Some users have complained for the absence of side markers but I think that's a genius move because you can use it either ways and it's equally comfortable and sounds equally amazing. I was hesitating to choose between hifiman XS and ATH R70X and my preference is neutral sound with good Soundstage and thanks to the headphone gurus i dont regret my decision. The other good thing is that despite the fact that it has a high impedance, it's easily driven by my fiio Q11 and use the volume at 50% level max.
The main drawbacks are it's design. The ear cups are huge enough for a big head like mine, they are comfortable. However they are non foldable and look a bit fragile and it's best to store them in a hardcase. The other issue are the removable cables. I have difficulty taking them off from the headphone. For this price mark I think audio technica could have designed a more premium looking built but the sound quality is no doubt excellent!!

Thanks a lot for your detailed and genuine feedback, we're glad that you have such positive thoughts about the product and we'll share your thoughts with the brand as well. It'll also help our fellow customers to make the right choice!
